Becoming a Tutor

I’ve been able to help a growing number of teaching professionals move into making a living from tutoring- including far more experienced teachers than myself! A colleague with more than 20 years more experience than me; an ex-head (my husband!); a retired HLTA; a burnt-out primary teacher.  All are now thriving as tutors with all the work they want (mostly around 25 hrs per week).

My body does not currently enjoy any kind of writing/sitting at length (one of my many reasons for leaving teaching!) so I’m branching out from tuition to start supporting others in starting out as tutors as a (cost effective!) consultant.

If you are not confident with self promotion, need some real-life experience to rely on, or just don’t know where to start, please email me.  As I start out on this new little venture, I’m offering a FREE 20 minute initial consultation, then £15 per 20 min video chat/phone-call.

My fees will be the same going forward, with as much support as you choose 🥰. I’m guessing that 4 – 6 x 20 mins will be sufficient in general, even if you are quite unsure at the start. However, you might only need one quick chat, and that is totally fine!

Sadly, many ex-teachers give up on teaching completely. Working for a company, possibly online, etc is a fairly thankless ( and unprofitable) task, often at c£15-20/hr. Be reassured, as a self-employed tutor working for yourself, it is possible to make a good living (with a few ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ of course!)

I have worked with people coming from various backgrounds: secondary teachers, SEN specialists, Early Years Practitioners, Senior Leaders, A-Level teachers, Primary teachers. I’m confident that I can give you good advice and during your free consultation I’ll help you to weigh up whether tuition is really viable for you. It’s not for everyone, but when it works it can be hugely rewarding.

How I can help:
– pitfalls to avoid starting out
– advice on materials to use
– best ways to engage with parents
– advertising tips
– face to face or online? Where? When? How?
– how to make lessons work for you
– avoiding ‘nightmare’ families (aka ones that don’t suit your situation!)
– advice on how much to charge, taking payments etc
– ethical dilemmas and safeguarding
– branching out e.g. 11+, older or younger students, other subjects

You’ll need to share:
– Proof of teaching qualification/equivalent (I don’t want to support any fraudsters or worse…)
– proof of name and address
